Biomedical Perception & Intelligence Lab

The Biomedical Perception Intelligence Lab — referred to across the research community as the Biomedical perception lab, or simply the perception intelligence lab — is an academic artificial intelligence group founded by Dr. Debesh Jha in the Department of Computer Science at the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, South Dakota, USA.

Work at the Biomedical perception intelligence lab spans multi-class endoscopy datasets, polyp detection benchmarks, dental radiograph diagnostics and deployable clinical imaging infrastructure, released openly as GastroVision, DentiMap and the DiseaseVision framework.

Research projects

  • GastroVision Challenge & Website

    GastroVision is a multi-class endoscopy image dataset of roughly 8,000 expert-annotated images across 27 classes from multiple centres. The GastroVision challenge and GastroVision website publish baseline benchmarks for computer aided gastrointestinal disease detection.

  • Polyp Detection & Segmentation

    Our polyp detection benchmark evaluates advanced transformer-based medical analysis models such as TransNetR and TransRUPNet on Kvasir-SEG and PolypGen, measuring real-time colonoscopy accuracy and out-of-distribution generalization.

  • DentiMap Portal

    DentiMap dental AI brings deep learning to panoramic dental radiograph diagnostics, highlighting cavities, infections and other findings so clinicians reach faster, more precise decisions.

  • DiseaseVision

    The DiseaseVision framework is our computerized clinical imaging infrastructure and benchmarking platform, serving live medical AI models for polyp segmentation, capsule endoscopy classification and dental analysis from one interface.
